January Programs Focus on Mental Health & Well-Being

Two events in January focused on mental health and well-being on our campuses. On January 11, we held a virtual panel on Student Mental Health and the Classroom with over 60 NY6 colleagues joining our panelists, Marcus Hotaling (Ph.D., Union College), Tina Tao (Ed.D., St. Lawrence University), and David Walden (Ph.D., Hamilton College). The conversation provided broad context to the mental health challenges of our students, the role that faculty can play in helping to support them, and strategies that faculty can use to establish boundaries and expectations that will help them to strike a balance between compassion and accountability. On January 13, we hosted a webinar facilitated by Susan Walzer (Ph.D., MSW, Professor of Sociology Emeritus, Skidmore College) on Navigating Faculty Life with Self-Compassion. Susan led the group of over 30 NY6 faculty members through an exploration of some of the unique challenges of faculty life followed by an introduction to mindful self-compassion as a resource for meeting difficult moments and interactions with resilience.
