"Immigration, Borders and Executive Orders": Conversations with Faculty and Students

Two of the three panelists have been confirmed, and the day's events will include the following:

  • 11:00-12:30: Expert Panel with Q&A session
    This will be open to the public with faculty and students encouraged to attend.  Live webstream will be made available for those connecting remotely.

  • 12:30-1:00: Lunch
  • 1:00-2:00: Faculty Workshops
    Breakout sessions with faculty and panelists on the following topics:
    • Borders & Boundaries: Policy changes and labor in upstate New York
    • Executive Order Impacts on Higher Ed: What do we tell our students?
    • Policy options & what we can do in our communities
 

Break-out discussions with panelists & invited faculty. Lunch provided. RSVP by 3/1. Evening reception with dinner for invited guests.

Panelists include: 

  • Ruben Garcia, Founder of Annunciation House in El Paso, Texas, which aids immigrants fleeing violence in Mexico and Central America.  Mr. Garcia is a staunch advocate for the rights of migrant families.
  • Heather Prendergast, an Immigration Attorney and Chair of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Liaison Committee, American Immigration Lawyers Association, and aluma of Skidmore College.  
  • Andrea Callan, Program Director at the Worker Justice Center of New York.  Ms. Callan is an expert on legal authority and sanctuary in New York State.

Supported as part of the NY6 Upstate-Global Collective working group on “Immigration and Human Rights: Border Issues to the North, South, and Beyond,” faculty and students interested in the impacts of recent executive orders on U.S. immigration policy are invited to join us for an expert panel and Q&A session. The panel is open to the public and will be live streamed online to the NY6 campuses.
