Colgate and Hobart & William Smith Colleges Pioneer Collaborative Intercampus Interaction with Introductory Portuguese Course
Colgate University and Hobart and William Smith Colleges are using a synchronous interactive web conferencing lecture tool to offer introductory Portuguese instruction at two New York Six schools that previously did not offer traditional instruction in this language. As part of the New York Six Language Learning Groups project, an initiative funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, support is being offered to expand instruction in less-commonly taught languages, including Portuguese, through intercampus interactions. Dr. Cory Duclos, Director of the Keck Language Resource Center at Colgate University, is working in collaboration with Dr. William Garcia at Union College, to develop an introductory Portuguese course that can be opened up to students at any of the New York Six schools. The students appreciate the ability to interact with colleagues at other institutions, and are also taking advantage of technology to connect with Brazilian students overseas.
